Hagia Sophia’s Entrance Density Decreases with New Regulation

The Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul has implemented a new application to separate the entrance for worshippers and tourists. This new regulation, initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as part of restoration and conservation works, aims to reduce the density at the entrances of mosques.

Turkish citizens who come to the mosque for worship will now enter through the Imperial Gate in Sultanahmet Square, while tourists will use a separate entrance starting from the door opposite Ahmet Fountain and continuing on the gallery floor. There is an entrance fee of 25 avro for tourists, and they will have the opportunity to explore the mosque’s sanctuary floor, Ottoman period annexes, and Byzantine period mosaics.

With the implementation of a QR code application, visitors can receive information in 23 languages through the headsets of their mobile phones or disposable headphones provided. This allows tourists to explore the historical and cultural significance of Hagia Sophia without disturbing worshippers.

Overall, this new application is expected to streamline the visiting experience for both worshippers and tourists, while also preserving the heritage and sanctity of Hagia Sophia.
