Haiti’s Prime Minister Resigns Following Armed Gang Clashes
In a surprising turn of events, Prime Minister Henry of Haiti has officially submitted his resignation to the members of the Council of Ministers. The announcement was made from Los Angeles, USA, where he shared the news on his social media account.
In his resignation letter, Henry acknowledged the current situation in Haiti and expressed his gratitude to his cabinet members, public administration, security forces, and all the patriots who supported him during his time in office.
Following Henry’s resignation, Finance Minister Patrick Boisvert has been appointed as the acting prime minister. Haiti is now being governed by a 9-person transitional council made up of political and civil society representatives.
The resignation comes after armed gangs in Haiti carried out violent attacks on two prisons near Port-au Prince and the Croix des Bouquets region. These attacks led to the escape of approximately 4 thousand prisoners and resulted in the loss of 12 lives. The government has since declared a state of emergency to apprehend the criminals responsible.
Additionally, armed gangs have been blocking roads in the capital city and disrupting the operations of the international airport and the country’s largest port. This has caused delays in the arrival of essential goods needed by the population.
According to the United Nations, the first three months of 2024 have seen a significant rise in violence in Haiti, with an estimated 2,500 people killed or injured due to gang-related incidents. The situation remains tense as the country tries to navigate through these challenging times.
