Stock and Futures Trading Suspended at Hong Kong Stock Exchange Due to Adverse Weather Conditions
The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Corporation (HKEX) announced today that stock and futures trading has been suspended in the daytime session at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This decision comes as a result of the rules regarding adverse weather conditions.
Foreign investors who engage in “Stock Connect” transactions, which allow them to purchase stocks traded in mainland China through the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, will also be affected by this measure.
Yesterday, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a “level 8” emergency alert and a “black” storm warning due to an approaching typhoon on the region’s coasts. As a result, the warnings remained in effect until the opening time of the stock market today. However, at 11:40 local time, the intensity of the typhoon decreased and it started moving away from the region. Consequently, the level of warnings was reduced to a “level 3” emergency alert and a “red” storm warning.
It is expected that trading on the stock exchange will resume in the afternoon as the weather conditions improve.
