Hungarian MEP Advocates for Improved Cancer Care and Prevention in EU Parliament
András Kulja, a member of Hungary’s opposition Tisza Party and a Member of the European Parliament, made a passionate plea for improved oncology services, particularly in the treatment of children, during a session at the European Parliament on Wednesday.
Addressing a conference held in honor of World Cancer Day, Kulja highlighted that Hungary has the highest number of cancer cases per capita among OECD countries. He emphasized the importance of efficient screening programs, public health campaigns to raise awareness, and education on recognizing early symptoms of cancer.
In a statement released by Tisza’s EP group, Kulja criticized the Hungarian government for lacking a coherent health strategy. He pointed out that participation in screening programs for breast, colon, and cervical cancers has declined since 2010. Kulja stressed the necessity of protecting health professionals, improving their working conditions, and ensuring they receive fair salaries.
Furthermore, Kulja expressed concern over the fact that Hungarians consume less fruit and vegetables than recommended. He attributed this to a challenging economic situation, as well as Europe’s high food prices and Hungary’s 27 percent VAT rate.
It is evident that András Kulja is dedicated to addressing the healthcare challenges facing Hungary, particularly in the field of oncology. His advocacy for improved services and support for health professionals is essential in the fight against cancer in the country.
