Hungarian Minister Threatens Foreign Companies and Confesses to Drinking Away First Salary
The issue of sovereignty is a top priority for the political community leading Hungary, as stated by the minister of construction and transport on Thursday. However, during the National Administrative Professionals’ Day conference, he shared details about his early career and struggles with his first salary.
János Lázár expressed concern over the lack of attractive salaries in the Hungarian public service, emphasizing the need for employees to be humble and committed to serving the country or their local community. He recounted starting his career at the mayor’s office in Hódmezővásárhely at the age of 20, where his low wages led to spending his entire salary on drinks with friends over a weekend.
At the Portfolio Construction 2024 conference, Lázár discussed the government’s stance on sovereignty, emphasizing that Hungarians should have a say in decisions affecting their country. He criticized previous governments for prioritizing multinational interests over national sovereignty but assured that the current administration aimed to make Hungary a key state in the region.
Highlighting the importance of specific industries, Lázár identified the car industry as a key sector for Hungary’s economic growth. He also emphasized the significance of the defence, food, and construction industries, stressing the need for foreign businesses investing in Hungary to respect the country and its consumers.
Addressing supermarket chain Spar’s complaint to the EU regarding a special tax, Lázár warned that foreign companies must respect Hungarian consumers to sustain their presence in the country. He criticized Spar for baseless accusations and suggested that the government consider buying out the entire company in response.
Overall, Lázár’s statements reflect Hungary’s commitment to maintaining sovereignty, prioritizing key industries for economic development, and holding foreign businesses accountable for their actions in the country.
