Hungary’s Szolnok Plant Manufactures Underground Carriages for Liverpool and Glasgow

Swiss railway vehicle company Stadler is making significant progress on the new trainsets for the Tyne and Wear Metro in the UK. With 23 out of 46 planned units already delivered, Hungarian workers at Stadler’s plant in Szolnok are playing a vital role in the project’s success by manufacturing the vehicle bodies.

According to SOL, testing and commissioning of the new trains are well underway, marking a symbolic milestone for the replacement program. The Szolnok plant has now become the largest aluminum car body manufacturing facility in the Stadler Group, contributing significantly to the production of high-tech vehicles.

Half of the Tyne and Wear Metro trains ordered by Nexus have been completed and delivered by Stadler, bringing the fleet closer to entering service. The new trains are designed to be safe, reliable, and comfortable, with modern amenities such as charging points, air conditioning, and automatic exit stairs at all doors to improve boarding and alighting for passengers.

These metro coaches are specifically tailored for metropolitan networks with frequent stops and short journeys. Stadler is also supplying metro cars to other regions, including Liverpool City Region and Glasgow Subway. Overall, Stadler has sold 840 units globally, with testing on the Tyne and Wear network ongoing since last year.

The ongoing progress on the Tyne and Wear Metro project showcases the expertise and dedication of Stadler and its workforce, including Hungarian workers who are instrumental in the successful production of these state-of-the-art trains.
