Record Number of Spanish Citizens Choose to Vote by Mail in General Elections
Spain recently witnessed a surge in applications for voting by mail, with a record number of citizens opting for this method since the last general elections. Coinciding with the holiday period, this election saw a remarkable turnout of 35.1 million registered voters.
As reported by the Supreme Election Board and the country’s official postal company, Correos, the demand for voting by mail has increased by a staggering 90 percent compared to the previous general elections held in 2019. A total of 2.4 million Spanish citizens chose to cast their votes by mail in this election, with 480 thousand voters having exercised this right between July 3rd and 20th.
The decision to hold early general elections on July 23rd, as announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on May 29th, sparked controversy in the country due to the fact that around 40 percent of Spaniards typically go on vacation during this period, according to statistics.
To accommodate this unique circumstance, certain conveniences were introduced for this election. Under existing Spanish laws, citizens who were assigned to work at polling stations were at risk of fines or imprisonment if they failed to fulfill their duties. However, the Supreme Election Board declared that individuals who had already scheduled their holidays before May 29th could cancel their polling obligations.
This new flexibility allowed voters to participate in the election without feeling burdened by conflicting holiday plans. The introduction of these provisions aimed to ensure a fair and democratic electoral process for all citizens.
