Industry Representatives Discuss Water Conservation and Wastewater Recycling on World Water Day

On March 22, World Water Day, industry representatives gathered to evaluate the efforts of industrialists in reducing water consumption and promoting wastewater recycling. Erdal Bahçıvan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO), highlighted the impact of climate change on water resources in Turkey, emphasizing the need for collaboration in finding long-term solutions to water management.

Bahçıvan reported that currently, 77 percent of water in Turkey is used for agricultural irrigation, followed by drinking-use at 12 percent, and industry at 11 percent. He specified that the food sector accounts for 22 percent of industrial water use, textiles for 18 percent, and chemistry for 16 percent. Bahçıvan emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in water and wastewater management, noting that industrialists are making progress in these areas.

Furthermore, Bahçıvan announced the upcoming release of the “Industry-Focused Climate-Sensitive Integrated Water-Wastewater Management Report,” which will provide a roadmap for effective water and wastewater management practices. He highlighted the role of the industrial sector in meeting sustainability goals and addressing water stress issues.

Ahmet Öksüz, Chairman of the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters Association (ITHIB), discussed the textile industry’s efforts to reduce water consumption and environmental impact. As a leading sector in sustainability initiatives, the textile industry is focusing on responsible production practices and incorporating circular economy principles into business strategies.

In addition, Kazım Taycı, Chairman of the Istanbul Grains, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters Association, emphasized the importance of efficient water use in agriculture. Taycı highlighted the need for modern irrigation systems to conserve water and improve agricultural practices, pointing out that agriculture is the sector that consumes the most water in Turkey.
