Investigation launched into farmer’s death in Uzun district by Prosecutor’s office and Ombudsman

The Supreme Judicial Council has announced that a service investigation has been launched against the judge who ordered the administrative arrest of farmer Tohir Hayitov just hours before his untimely death. The deceased was taken from his home by Internal Affairs Department officers as part of an urgent operation to solve a brutal murder that occurred in Uzun district, according to his relatives.

Tohir Hayitov, who was being questioned in connection with the murder case, passed away on February 27, showing signs of torture on his body. The Prosecutor General’s Office is currently conducting a pre-investigation inquiry into the incident, as reported by their spokesperson Hayot Shamsutdinov.

Furthermore, the Ombudsman’s regional representatives are also looking into the case, and an official statement will be released once their investigation is complete. The Ombudsman’s press secretary, Fotima Madrahimova, confirmed this in a statement to the media.

The investigation revealed discrepancies in the court’s ruling that sentenced Tohir Hayitov to six days of administrative detention just before his death. As a result, the Supreme Judicial Council has initiated a service investigation against the investigating judge, Azamberdi Alikulov, who issued the ruling.

It was noted that there may have been a violation of the Judicial Code of Ethics in the examination of the administrative violation case involving the deceased, prompting the investigation against Judge Alikulov.

The incident stems from a murder that took place in Surkhandarya on February 15, where three family members were killed. Tohir Hayitov was among the men from the region who were summoned for questioning at the Uzun District Internal Affairs Department as part of the investigation. His death on February 25, allegedly due to a “heart attack” following two days at the department, has raised suspicions among his relatives, who claim to have seen signs of torture on his body and believe he may have been wrongly implicated in the crime.
