Israeli Government Announces Plans for New Settlements in West Bank
In response to a recent armed attack in the illegal Jewish settlement of Eli in the West Bank, the Israeli Prime Ministry Press Office has issued a statement announcing plans for the construction of approximately 1,000 new settlements in the area. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich expressed their view that the attack was an act of terrorism and that the response should be to “hit it hard and build our country.”
The decision to establish these new settlements has been met with criticism as it goes against international law. It is seen as a retaliation for the armed attack, but many argue that it further escalates tensions in the region. The statement’s use of the term “our country” for the West Bank, which is considered Palestinian land under international law, highlights the ongoing occupation and annexation by Israel.
The Israeli army’s recent attack on the city of Jenin in the West Bank resulted in the deaths of 7 Palestinians, including two children, and left over 66 Palestinians injured. Seven Israeli soldiers were also injured in the clashes. The attack was carried out using helicopters and armored vehicles.
The illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have long been a source of tension.
