UNRWA’s Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired Destroyed in Gaza
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has made a statement on social media regarding the destruction of its Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired in Gaza.
The statement highlighted the devastating impact of the destruction, emphasizing that the center provided essential resources and activities for visually impaired children in the Gaza Strip. These included relief printers, canes, visual education aids, as well as recreational activities such as arts, sports, and music.
UNRWA expressed that the center had been a vital facility that allowed visually impaired children to express themselves and imagine a future. It was noted that the center was the only one of its kind in the region, providing special tools for children with visual impairments.
In images shared by UNRWA, the extent of the damage to the center is evident, with the facility rendered unusable as a result of the recent attacks.
The destruction of the UNRWA center is part of a wider pattern of devastation in the Gaza Strip. Since October 7, Israel’s attacks have resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians, including children and women, and the injury of tens of thousands more. Civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and educational institutions, has also been targeted.
UNRWA, which has been providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees since 1950, has been repeatedly impacted by Israel’s military actions. The agency’s facilities have been hit, and tons of food and medicine have been destroyed.
Following Israel’s claims that UNRWA personnel were involved in the attacks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an urgent investigation, which UNRWA has initiated.
The situation has also had diplomatic repercussions, as several countries, including Germany, Switzerland, and the United States, have announced a temporary suspension of financial support to UNRWA, while others like Norway, Ireland, and Spain have pledged to continue their support.
The destruction of the Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired is a tragic example of the broader humanitarian crisis in the region, underscoring the urgent need for international action to address the situation in Gaza.
