Israel set to protest countries supporting full Palestine membership

Israel Summons Ambassadors of Countries Supporting Palestine’s UN Membership

In response to the recent vote on Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Israel has taken diplomatic action. The Spokesperson of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the ambassadors of the countries voting in favor of Palestine’s membership will be summoned to the ministry tomorrow.

Minister Yisrael Katz has instructed for the ambassadors of France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, Slovakia, and Ecuador to be summoned for a diplomatic initiative. A “strong protest” will be submitted to these ambassadors during the meeting.

Palestine first applied for full membership in the UN in 2011 but did not receive the necessary support in the UNSC. Instead, Palestine was granted “permanent observer status” in 2012. Recently, Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Riyad Mansur, requested a reconsideration of their membership application in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Guterres, in turn, wrote a letter to the UNSC urging them to put Palestine’s demand for full membership on the agenda. However, the draft resolution for Palestine’s membership was ultimately rejected due to the United States’ veto as a permanent member.

During the vote, the US opposed the resolution, while England and Switzerland abstained. On the other hand, Russia, China, France, Algeria, Malta, Ecuador, Guyana, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, South Korea, and Japan voted in favor of Palestine’s full membership.

The diplomatic tensions surrounding Palestine’s UN membership bid continue to escalate, with Israel taking a firm stance against the countries supporting the Palestinian cause. It remains to be seen how this latest development will impact the ongoing efforts for a peaceful resolution in the region.
