Israeli Delegation Travels to USA “Warning against an Attack on Refah”
The US State Department has expressed its disagreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans for a “land operation” in Rafah, stating that such a military operation would be a disaster. After a meeting with President Joe Biden, Netanyahu announced that plans for the operation were still ongoing. However, a spokesperson for the US State Department, Vedant Patel, stated that the US does not share the same perspective as Israel on this issue.
In a press briefing, Patel highlighted that without a reliable and implementable plan, an operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million people have taken refuge, would have disastrous consequences. The US State Department is working with Israeli officials to explore alternative plans to address the situation in Rafah without resorting to a comprehensive ground operation.
Meanwhile, the United Nations recently released a report indicating that Gaza is facing a severe hunger crisis, with famine looming. Patel expressed deep concern over the situation and emphasized the need for more aid to reach those in need in Gaza. He also stated that the US does not agree with Israel’s use of hunger as a weapon of war.
Regarding President Biden’s memorandum limiting military aid to countries that do not comply with international law, Patel stated that the memorandum applies to multiple countries and not just Israel. Israel, along with other relevant countries, must provide assurance that they are acting in accordance with international law within 45 days to continue receiving aid.
Additionally, Patel addressed the issue of Philippe Lazzarini, the General Commissioner of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), who Israel did not allow to enter Gaza. Patel stressed the importance of humanitarian aid agencies being able to operate freely and urged Israel to facilitate the entry of Lazzarini and other UN officials into Gaza.
In response to questions about the US openly criticizing Israel, Patel clarified that their statements have always prioritized Israel’s right to self-defense against Hamas. However, they have also voiced concerns about humanitarian aid, civilian casualties, and welfare issues in the region. The US remains committed to working with Israel to address these critical issues.
