The Destruction in Gaza: What We Know
In a recent statement released by the government-affiliated media office in Gaza, alarming information has come to light regarding the widespread destruction caused by the ongoing attacks carried out by Israel since October 7th.
The statement asserts that a comprehensive genocide has been perpetrated against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, with Israeli and US forces purportedly bombing every square meter of the region.
According to the statement, a staggering 53,000 tons of bombs were utilized in the Israeli attacks, resulting in the complete destruction of 52,500 houses in the Gaza Strip. Additionally, a total of 306,500 houses in the region sustained partial damage as a result of the bombardments.
The extent of the devastation is further revealed as the statement outlines that 126 public buildings and 112 government-affiliated mosques were entirely destroyed, with an additional 200 mosques suffering partial damage. Furthermore, 3 churches were significantly impacted, alongside 90 schools and universities that were left completely out of service, with an additional 282 educational institutions sustaining partial damage.
The toll on Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure is also highlighted, as the statement reports that 22 hospitals and 53 health centers were left inoperable, and 138 health institutions were targeted. Tragically, 102 ambulances were rendered unusable as a result of the Israeli bombardments.
The human cost of the attacks is equally devastating, with the statement revealing that 300 medical personnel, 32 civil defense officers, and 96 journalists lost their lives in the Israeli attacks. Shockingly, an additional 40 medical personnel and 8 journalists were detained by Israeli forces. The statement also notes that 7,000 people, primarily children and women, are missing, either buried under the debris or with fates unknown.
The situation has further escalated following Hamas’s armed wing, Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, launching a wide-ranging attack on Israel on October 7th. Israel has reported 1,200 casualties and 5,132 injuries among its citizens, while the attacks in the Gaza Strip have claimed the lives of 19,453 Palestinians, including thousands trapped under the rubble.
Moreover, amidst the conflict, 461 Israeli soldiers have been killed, with the Israeli army announcing 129 casualties during the land invasion process. The humanitarian crisis has prompted a brief ceasefire, resulting in the mutual release of 81 Israeli and 240 Palestinian prisoners. However, thousands of Palestinians remain detained by Israeli forces.
Additionally, the violence has spread to the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, leading to the loss of 301 Palestinian lives in attacks by Israeli forces and illegal Jewish settlers. Clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah in Lebanon have also resulted in casualties, as 24 Lebanese civilians, 109 Hezbollah members, 5 Israeli civilians, and 6 Israeli soldiers have lost their lives.
Amid these developments, 1.9 million Palestinians in Gaza continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, displaced under blockade and struggling to survive without shelter, food, clean water, medicine, and adequate health services.
As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains on high alert, with urgent calls for diplomatic efforts to mitigate the escalating humanitarian crisis and loss of life in Gaza.
