Israel’s Sole Survivor: The Genocide Case

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has passed multiple precautionary measures against Israel in response to the Republic of South Africa’s accusations of genocide in Gaza. The majority of the judges supported the measures, with the exception of Ugandan Judge Julia Sebutinde, who unconditionally supported Israel.

The ICJ’s decisions included orders for Israel to take all measures to punish and prevent incitement of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, as well as to provide urgently needed basic services and humanitarian aid. Former Israeli Supreme Court President Aharon Barak, appointed as an ad-hoc judge for this case, also supported these decisions. However, Sebutinde objected to these measures, resulting in a final vote of 16 in favor and 1 against.

Furthermore, the ICJ also issued other precautionary measures, such as preventing genocide in Gaza, ensuring the preservation of evidence of violations, and submitting a report on all measures taken. In these cases, Sebutinde and Barak voted against the measures, resulting in a final tally of 15 in favor and 2 against.

It is clear from these decisions that the ICJ has taken a strong stance against the alleged acts of genocide in Gaza, with the majority of judges supporting the measures. However, the dissenting voices from Uganda and Israel highlight the complexity and sensitivity of the case. This development will undoubtedly have significant implications for the ongoing legal proceedings and the broader international community’s response to the situation in Gaza.
