Italian Citizen Faces Trial in Hungary Handcuffed: Italy’s Reaction

Italian Woman Detained in Hungary Causes Outrage in Italy
The recent court appearance of 39-year-old Italian Ilaria Salis, who has been detained in Hungary for nearly a year, has sparked a diplomatic crisis and public outrage in Italy. Salis, detained for attacking two right-wing extremists, was brought to court in handcuffs and feet, along with two special operations police officers. This treatment has caused tensions between Rome and Budapest.
A statement by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Italian government’s protest against the detention conditions of Ilaria Salis. The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, further emphasized the need for the Italian government to take action in accordance with European legislation on Salis.
Minister Tajani also made a statement to “Radio Anchio,” expressing concern about the treatment of Salis, and reiterated the expectation that Salis should be respected, even during her detention in Hungary. He also conveyed this message to Hungarian interlocutors, emphasizing the importance of respecting citizens’ rights.
This situation has also become an important issue in Italian politics, particularly due to the good relations between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The Italian opposition has criticized Meloni for not taking decisive action in the case, emphasizing that the interests of Italian citizens should come before political alliances.
Ilaria Salis, who defines herself as anti-fascist and teaches in Monza, was involved in events against far-right extremists in Hungary last year, resulting in her detainment. The Budapest Prosecutor’s Office has requested an 11-year prison sentence for her. The situation has prompted calls for the Italian government to take action to address Salis’ detention in Hungary.
The case of Ilaria Salis and the treatment she received during her court appearance in Hungary has created significant diplomatic and political tensions, signaling the need for a resolution to this issue.
