Japan’s Loan for Earthquake Zone Reconstruction: Latest Economic Updates

Japan Provides 60 Billion Yen Loan for Earthquake Disaster Emergency Reconstruction Project in Turkey

In a recent statement released by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), it was announced that an agreement had been signed with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance to provide a Japanese ODA (Official Development Assistance) loan of approximately 60 billion Japanese yen for the “Earthquake Disaster Emergency Reconstruction Project” in Turkey.

The Exchange of Notes for the project was signed between the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and the Japanese Ambassador to Turkey, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis.

The signing ceremony, which took place with the presence of Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek, Japan’s Ambassador to Turkey Takahiko Katsumata, and JICA President Akihiko Tanaka, marked a significant step towards aiding the regions affected by the earthquake.

The planned activities for the utilization of the loan in the affected areas were outlined in the statement, including the reconstruction and construction of municipal infrastructures, procurement of ambulances, reconstruction and construction of ambulance stations, as well as the reconstruction and construction of rural residences and village infrastructure.

The implementation of the project will be overseen by the Bank of Provinces, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. Moreover, the JICA loan has been coordinated closely with the World Bank as a parallel co-financing project to ensure maximum impact and efficiency.

Japan, having experienced its fair share of earthquakes, expressed solidarity with Turkey and its people in the wake of the disasters that struck in February 2023. JICA has been actively involved in providing support, ranging from sending search and rescue teams to sharing valuable insights based on Japan’s own earthquake experiences.

Furthermore, JICA also signed a loan agreement with KOSGEB to provide a Japanese ODA loan of 20 billion Japanese yen in December 2023 to support SMEs in earthquake-affected areas. The overall goal of these initiatives is to facilitate the swift recovery and reconstruction of the affected regions by enhancing infrastructure, housing, and healthcare services for the local communities.

The collaboration between Japan and Turkey in this critical time exemplifies the spirit of international solidarity and cooperation in addressing significant challenges such as natural disasters. With the support of JICA and other key stakeholders, Turkey is poised to embark on a path towards resilience and prosperity in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes.
