During a meeting on Sept. 13, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Chairman of Asia Infrastructure Solutions Singapore Wong Heang Fine to discuss the implementation of the Alatau City project in the Almaty Region. The meeting addressed the development of Alatau City through the attraction of foreign investment, technology, and competencies.

The master plan for Alatau City, developed in collaboration with the Singapore company Surbana Jurong, was adopted in May. President Tokayev expressed confidence in Wong Heang Fine’s recommendations as the primary consultant for the project, emphasizing the importance of his expertise in developing international business hubs.

Alatau City, located in the Ili district of the Almaty Region, was declared a city of regional significance in January by a decree issued by the President. Kazakhstan aims to build a new integrated metropolis inspired by Singapore’s model, with the goal of becoming a leading international business hub that meets global standards.

Prior to this meeting, President Tokayev also met with Glencore CEO Gary Nagle on Sept. 12. Glencore is a Swiss multinational commodity trading and mining company. During the meeting, President Tokayev was briefed on Glencore’s current activities and future plans in the mining, metallurgy, and energy sectors in Kazakhstan.

President Tokayev highlighted the importance of adhering to environmental standards and incorporating innovative technologies in production processes during discussions with Glencore representatives. These meetings reflect Kazakhstan’s commitment to developing sustainable and advanced projects in collaboration with international partners.
