Kazakhstan Strengthens Partnership with International Labor Organization
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan recently met with Gilbert Houngbo, the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), during his first official visit to the country. The meeting was highlighted as being of exceptional importance, as it signifies a significant step towards strengthening cooperation between Kazakhstan and the ILO.
During the meeting, President Tokayev praised the ILO for its efforts in promoting social justice globally and outlined Kazakhstan’s ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing social well-being, upholding the rule of law, and protecting human rights. He expressed Kazakhstan’s commitment to building a “Just Kazakhstan” that aligns with the ILO’s mission of ensuring a fair and effective social contract and promoting workers’ rights.
In response, Houngbo commended Kazakhstan’s reforms and acknowledged the country’s leadership in advancing the ILO’s objectives in the region. Discussions were held on Kazakhstan’s efforts to create favorable social and labor conditions in line with the ILO’s initiatives within the Global Coalition for Social Justice.
Further meetings took place with Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu, where discussions centered around Kazakhstan’s adherence to ILO standards and ongoing improvements in national labor laws. Both sides reiterated their interest in resuming cooperation under the Decent Work Country Program and increasing Kazakhstan’s representation within the ILO.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Tamara Duissenova emphasized Kazakhstan’s support for the Global Coalition for Social Justice and highlighted the government’s initiatives to foster a fair labor market and boost citizens’ income. She underlined the importance of maintaining a balance between state interests, employers, and workers through social dialogue and a dedicated tripartite commission.
Duissenova also highlighted Kazakhstan’s focus on providing highly qualified personnel, transitioning its educational system to international standards, and implementing successful social policies such as the Digital Family Card. The government’s continuous efforts to improve national legislation in line with ILO standards were also acknowledged, with Kazakhstan expressing interest in deepening cooperation with the ILO.
Houngbo commended Kazakhstan’s progress and welcomed its participation in the Global Coalition for Social Justice, offering opportunities for knowledge exchange with other nations. He participated in a scientific conference on promoting social justice in the era of the knowledge economy and artificial intelligence, as well as engaged with representatives of trade unions and employers during his visit.
Overall, the meetings between President Tokayev and the ILO Director-General reflect Kazakhstan’s commitment to advancing social justice, promoting workers’ rights, and strengthening cooperation with international organizations like the ILO. Kazakhstan’s ratification of 25 ILO conventions demonstrates its dedication to upholding international labor standards and integrating them into national legislation.
