Kılıçdaroğlu’s Political Plans with Imamoglu

CHP Plans to Hold District and Provincial Congresses Ahead of Presidential Election

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) is preparing for a series of congresses in the lead-up to the presidential election. As calls for change are heard from abroad and preparations for a congress at the CHP headquarters continue, the party plans to hold district and provincial congresses at the end of October, or to complete them by November at the latest. The purpose of the congresses is to elect new congressional delegates who will have a decisive vote in the presidential race if there is one.

The big convention, however, is still up in the air. All eyes are on CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who is considering holding the ordinary congress after the local elections. Journalist Fikret Bila wrote Kılıçdaroğlu’s road map in a recent article, stating that he believes the victory of the CHP and other opposition parties in the local elections should be the first and common goal.

Kılıçdaroğlu also attaches importance to the re-election of metropolitan mayors elected by the Nation Alliance votes. The CHP leader’s decision on whether or not to be a candidate in the congress will be finalized at the event. The CHP headquarters administration is of the opinion that the local elections should be held under Kılıçdaroğlu’s chairmanship, while the intra-party discussions and the race will be left after the local elections are over.

The CHP’s preparations come amid growing discontent with incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been in power for more than a decade and has faced increasing criticism from the opposition as well as international organizations. The CHP hopes to be able to unite the opposition and unseat Erdogan in the presidential election.
