Korea Starts Production of Long-Range Artillery Ammo

South Korea is set to increase the effectiveness of its K9 self-propelled howitzer units with the mass production of new 155 mm ammunition. The extended range of the new ammunition, which has been under development for approximately 10 years, is expected to enhance the capabilities of the K9 howitzer.

The decision to supply ammunition support for the K9 howitzer elements within the army was announced by South Korea, with plans for mass production of the new 155 mm ammunition set to begin in 2024. The first order for 2,000 units of the ammunition with extended flight range was placed in 2023, with a scheduled delivery by the end of 2024.

This development marks an important milestone for South Korea, signifying the completion of a long research and development phase. The new ammunition, produced by the Poongsan defense company, is reported to have an approximately 30% longer flight range compared to existing ammunition.

The increased range of the new ammunition is attributed to the addition of an additional solid fuel charge, setting it apart from the existing rocket accelerator high explosive used in the base of the K307 ammunition. South Korean officials are hopeful that the new development will not only meet domestic needs but also attract international demand, potentially boosting the export potential of the nationally designed 155mm K9 self-propelled howitzer.

The K9 Thunder, for which these new ammunitions are being developed, was designed and developed by the South Korean Defense Development Agency and Samsung Aerospace on behalf of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. It is currently manufactured by Hanwha Defense. The K9 Thunder is equipped with a 155 mm / 52 caliber gun with a maximum firing range of 40 km, making it a formidable addition to South Korea’s military capabilities.

The move towards mass production of the new ammunition reflects South Korea’s determination to increase its military capabilities and potentially expand its export opportunities. With a production contract expected to be signed later this year, South Korea is poised to strengthen its defense capabilities for the foreseeable future.
