KTTB issues message for World MS Day

World Multiple Sclerosis Day is observed on May 30 every year to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis (MS), which is a disease that affects the central nervous system. In a message published on the occasion of World MS Day, the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association (KTTB) pointed out that MS is no longer an incurable disease that causes despair and hopelessness, thanks to the progress made in scientific research. The KTTB also shared some important facts about the disease, including the fact that it is more common in women with onset between the ages of 20-40.
The statement also corrected some misconceptions about MS, such as the belief that it is contagious, or that it is a fatal disease. It was emphasized that MS is not a mental illness and that the majority of people with MS are able to continue their normal lives and work. The KTTB also stressed the importance of social support, including from family, spouse, children, colleagues, and the community, in managing the disease and improving the patient’s quality of life.
Multiple sclerosis has no known cure, but there are different treatment options available that can help manage the symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease. The KTTB highlighted the importance of close cooperation between the individual with MS and a neurologist, and of adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
In conclusion, the KTTB’s message on World MS Day was a reminder that while MS can cause significant challenges, it is a treatable disease, and people with MS can still lead full and productive lives with the right support and care.
