Kyrgyz District Declares State of Emergency Due to Mudslides and Floods
The U.S. State Department has released its latest annual report on human rights around the globe, highlighting the ongoing atrocities committed by Russia, Iran, and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
In Russia, the report exposes numerous abuses and atrocities committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, with some amounting to war crimes. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova for their role in the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. At home, Russian authorities have continued to crack down on dissent and independent expression, imprisoning political opponents, clamping down on media outlets, and prosecuting individuals for expressing their opinions online.
In Iran, brutal human rights abuses continue to escalate, with women and marginalized communities facing the brunt of the regime’s violations. The report highlights the harsh punishment meted out to prisoners, including executions for bogus or unjust reasons. The number of executions in Iran rose by more than one-third last year, with 798 people put to death, including political dissidents.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban has been systematically mistreating and discriminating against women and girls since seizing power in August 2021. The report states that the Taliban have limited work opportunities for women, closed schools educating girls, and increased floggings for people accused of “immoral behavior.” The Taliban authorities have issued legislation that effectively erases women from public life and continue to show disregard for the rule of law and impunity for human rights abuses.
The report also touches on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, triggered by an attack on Israel by Hamas. The report condemns the serious abuses committed by both Hamas and Israel, including civilian deaths, enforced disappearances, torture, and violence against journalists.
