Kyrgyz Mercenary’s Escape to Russia Sparks Investigation
Russian forces have announced that they have gained control over the eastern Ukrainian town of Ocheretyne, which they had breached the defenses of about two weeks ago. This claim comes as Russian rockets have killed at least three people in eastern villages.
The town of Ocheretyne, which had a prewar population of about 3,700, has been left largely in ruins due to the ongoing fighting. Kyiv has not yet commented on Russia’s assertion of capturing Ocheretyne on May 5.

Russian troops, according to the Defense Ministry, have taken control of Ocheretyne through their Center command group. In Washington, the White House’s national security adviser stated that Russia is expected to advance further in the coming period but affirmed that Kyiv has the capacity to withstand the Russian assault. Plans are in place to reclaim territories taken by the Russians.
