Kyrgyz President Approves Controversial ‘Foreign Representatives’ Law Despite Criticism
House Speaker Mike Johnson (Republican-Louisiana) faced pushback from his own party on April 16 as he rejected calls to step aside over proposed U.S. security aid for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies. Despite mounting anger within his party, Johnson stated that he was not resigning and deemed the motion to oust him as “absurd.” He emphasized the importance of passing aid for U.S. allies, particularly Ukraine, in its fight against Russia.
Some far-right Republicans have threatened to remove Johnson as speaker if he allows a vote on assistance for Ukraine. There is skepticism among many hard-right Republicans, especially those aligned with former President Donald Trump, about providing additional financial support to Ukraine.
In response to the controversy, Johnson proposed considering national security assistance for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan separately, rather than as one comprehensive bill. Democrats have expressed willingness to evaluate this new proposal and stressed the urgency of passing the $95 billion package of security assistance approved by the Senate in February.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed cautious optimism about Johnson’s plan, emphasizing the need for swift action in the realm of national security. House committee leaders endorsed Johnson’s proposal, highlighting the importance of passing the aid package without delay to bolster U.S. national security interests.
Johnson announced that the House would address the aid bills separately, but the process of enacting them into law could extend for several weeks. If the House approves aid for Ukraine, the bill would then be returned to the Senate for consideration.
The details of the separate aid bills, including provisions for additional sanctions on Russia and Iran, have yet to be disclosed. Johnson also mentioned including the REPO Act, which involves seizing Russian assets to aid Ukraine.
As the debate unfolds within the Republican party and across party lines, the fate of U.S. security aid for Ukraine and other allies remains uncertain.
