Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan Prime Ministers discuss boosting trade relations
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are working towards restoring trade and economic ties, as indicated by recent discussions between officials from both countries. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, Adylbek Kasymaliev, expressed the intention to strengthen bilateral relations during a meeting with Tajikistan’s Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda.
The goal set during the meeting is to increase trade turnover between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to $500 million by the year 2030. This objective comes after a decline in trade between the two nations, with trade turnover dropping from $37 million in 2020 to $12 million in 2023. However, there was a 13.5 percent increase in trade turnover in 2024.
In addition to focusing on trade and economic ties, plans for the establishment of an Intergovernmental Council led by the heads of government of both countries were discussed. Furthermore, preparations for a trilateral meeting between the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in the city of Khujand were also highlighted.
Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Edil Baisalov, announced that the first-ever trilateral summit with the participation of the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan is scheduled to take place on March 31 in Khujand. This summit aims to address key areas of cooperation to enhance security, stability, and prosperity in Central Asia.
Overall, the discussions between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signify a mutual commitment to deepening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, and fostering regional collaboration in Central Asia.
