At least 36 cases of maternal mortality registered in Kyrgyzstan in 2024

In 2024, Kyrgyzstan saw at least 36 cases of maternal mortality, according to the Chief Specialist of the Ministry of Health, Raisa Asylbasheva, speaking to 24.kg news agency.

This number represents a slight decrease from the previous year, with two fewer cases recorded in 2023.

Asylbasheva attributed this positive trend to improvements in the conditions of women’s stay at maternity hospitals. One-day stay wards have been established in regions such as Bishkek and Osh, catering to patients in need of immediate delivery or further treatment. Additionally, a system has been implemented for redirecting pregnant women from district-level facilities to higher levels of care.

Continual training and experience exchange among healthcare personnel play a crucial role in enhancing maternal care in Kyrgyzstan. Domestic specialists are given opportunities to practice their skills in emergency obstetric care at renowned institutions such as the Kulakov National Research Medical Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Perinatology in Russia.

Efforts to improve standards, update clinical guidelines, and conduct confidential analyses of maternal mortality have also been ongoing. These measures help identify potential shortcomings and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite progress, there are still challenges to address. While up to 70 percent of pregnant women in Kyrgyzstan register for prenatal care before 12 weeks, there are cases where women seek medical help late in serious conditions. Furthermore, extragenital diseases impacting pregnancy and childbirth remain a relevant concern.

Overall, the efforts to enhance maternal care in Kyrgyzstan are commendable, but continuous vigilance and improvement are necessary to ensure the well-being of mothers and their babies.
