Kyrgyzstani Convicts Compete in Intercontinental Chess Tournament

Convicts from prisons in Kyrgyzstan recently showcased their chess skills in the 4th Intercontinental Online Chess Tournament among prisoners. Hosted under the theme “Chess for Freedom,” the tournament saw participation from inmates in various countries. The Kyrgyz Chess Union extended support to the inmates representing Kyrgyzstan, who managed to secure the fifth position in the overall standings.

The tournament, organized with a Swiss system format comprising seven rounds, featured a time control of 10 minutes for each player. An additional 5 seconds per move was granted, starting from the first move. Despite the unique circumstances of the participants, they displayed remarkable talent and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The State Penitentiary Service of Kyrgyzstan acknowledged the efforts of the convicts and highlighted the positive impact of such events on their rehabilitation and personal growth. The opportunity to engage in intellectual pursuits like chess not only serves as a recreational activity but also promotes strategic thinking and decision-making skills among the participants.
