Kyrgyzstan’s Gazprom Neft subsidiaries targeted by U.S. sanctions

The United States and the United Kingdom have taken steps to further expand sanctions against the Russian energy sector, targeting companies such as Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, along with more than two dozen of their subsidiaries. This decision was announced in a statement published on the website of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Specifically, the sanctions will impact Gazprom Neft’s oil refineries both in Russia and in various foreign locations such as Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Serbia. Among the subsidiaries included in these restrictions are Gazprom Neft Asia LLC and Munai-Myrza CJSC, based in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Gazprom Neft’s press service has stated that the company was already prepared for potential sanctions and has been operating under restrictions since 2022. They have assured that they will continue their operations while focusing on maintaining the sustainability of their business.

Furthermore, starting on February 27th, the U.S. will impose a ban on American companies providing oilfield services in Russia. Additionally, 183 vessels were targeted by the sanctions, with U.S. authorities identifying them as part of a “shadow fleet” used by Russian companies for oil transportation.

The U.S. government has described these measures as the most significant sanctions imposed on the Russian energy sector to date. In response, the Russian authorities have deemed the new restrictions as illegal. The situation between the countries continues to escalate as tensions rise in the ongoing conflict.
