Kyrgyzstan’s President Discusses Potential Return of Bakiyev
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has stated that fugitive former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev will be arrested if he returns to Kyrgyzstan. In an interview with Kabar news agency, Japarov emphasized that Bakiyev has criminal cases against him and has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. The President reiterated that the court verdict is final and cannot be annulled. However, Japarov added that he has the right to grant or deny a pardon if Bakiyev were to petition for one, taking into account the opinion of the people.
Bakiyev, who has been living in exile in Belarus, was sentenced by the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan to 24 years in prison. Japarov’s comments come in response to questions about the possible return of Bakiyev and whether he would face arrest upon arrival. The President’s stance underscores his commitment to upholding the rule of law in Kyrgyzstan.
It remains to be seen whether Bakiyev will seek a pardon from President Japarov or attempt to return to Kyrgyzstan. However, Japarov’s statement makes it clear that any such move would result in his arrest and detention.
