In a recent development, the private security company Wagner, founded by Prigojin, faced a revolt by its fighters against Russian rule. The events unfolded with Wagner accusing the Russian army of launching an attack on its forces and threatening to respond. Subsequently, Wagner fighters withdrew from Ukraine and entered the border region of Rostov.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) responded to this situation by initiating a criminal case against the group on charges of “armed riot.” Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned Wagner’s revolt, labeling it as an act of “treason.” Concerned about the escalating tensions, the Kremlin administration heightened security measures across the country.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko offered a proposed solution, which Wagner founder Prigojin accepted. As a result, Prigojin announced that the group would turn their convoys back and return to their field camps as per the plan. This decision was made to acknowledge their responsibility for the shedding of Russian blood.
The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitriy Peskov, stated that the criminal case against Prigojin would be closed, and the leader of the rebellion would relocate to Belarus. However, caution remains, as the situation has not been fully resolved, and unforeseen developments cannot be excluded.
Latvian official Eglite commented on the events in Russia, emphasizing that they consider them a military rebellion. Eglite expressed that despite the situation in Russia, Latvia remains focused on assisting Ukraine. He described Russia as an aggressive state and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in its fight against the invader. Eglite also highlighted the significant missile attack launched by Russia, with 53 missiles targeting Ukrainian territory.
While the rebellion within the Wagner group poses a challenge for the Russian authorities, its resolution and the subsequent measures taken will determine the stability and direction of the situation in the coming days.
