Lefke NGOs call for creation of Lefke Police Department
The Lefke Non-Governmental Organizations Platform has emphasized the urgent need for the establishment of the Lefke Police Department. Lefke, being the 6th and smallest district of the TRNC, has a population exceeding 30 thousand, consisting of locals, EUL students, Turkish citizens, and 3rd country nationals. The platform highlighted the rapid construction and population growth in areas like Gaziveren, Yeşilyurt, and Cengizköy, stressing the increasing security challenges faced in the region.
The statement pointed out that the current Lefke Police Station, with its limited personnel, is struggling to address the rising incidents of crime, including fighting, fraud, traffic violations, and drug offenses. The call for the re-establishment of the Lefke Police Department, which was lost in 1977, was made with the proposal to allocate a suitable building for the department, utilizing existing government office spaces and allocating additional construction areas if needed.
The platform urged the General Director of Police and other relevant authorities, especially the government, to take immediate action on this matter to ensure the safety and security of the growing population in Lefke.
