Lukashenka and Aliyev Meet in Nagorno-Karabakh

Belarusian President Lukashenka Visits Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh Region for the First Time
In a historic visit, Belarusian ruler Alyaksandr Lukashenka traveled to Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region on May 17th. This marked his first visit to the area since Baku regained full control over the region, known as Qarabag Province in Azeri, last year after decades of ethnic Armenian control.
The visit holds significant political importance as it symbolizes Lukashenka’s support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh. It also signals Belarus’ willingness to strengthen ties with Azerbaijan and align its foreign policy with Baku’s stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
During his visit, Lukashenka met with Azerbaijani officials and toured key sites in the region, showcasing solidarity with the Azerbaijani government and highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been a point of contention between Azerbaijan and Armenia for decades, with sporadic outbreaks of violence leading to a full-scale war in 2020. Azerbaijan’s successful military campaign resulted in the return of several territories, including Nagorno-Karabakh, under its control.
Lukashenka’s visit to the region signifies Belarus’ support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and its efforts to contribute to the peace process in the South Caucasus region. It also reflects the growing alliance between Belarus and Azerbaijan in the face of regional challenges and shared interests.
Overall, Lukashenka’s visit to Nagorno-Karabakh underscores the importance of diplomatic engagements and political support in resolving longstanding conflicts and fostering cooperation between countries in the region.
