Intensive Security Measures Taken in Istanbul on May 1
The Istanbul Police Department has implemented intensive security measures around Taksim Square in preparation for May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day. The teams have closed off streets leading to Taksim Republic Monument and Taksim Square with iron barriers. Checkpoints have been set up in some areas, restricting civilian access to the square.
Furthermore, all avenues and streets opening to Istiklal Avenue, from the square to Tünel, have also been closed off with iron barriers. Police teams are stationed at every entrance to ensure only authorized personnel, tradesmen, and tourists can access Istiklal Street.
Traffic teams are on standby on all roads and intersections leading to Taksim, ensuring smooth implementation of the security measures. Metro stations between Vezneciler and Gayrettepe have been closed as of 05.30, affecting the M2 Yenikapı-Seyrantepe-Hacıosman Metro Line.
Funicular lines between Kabataş-Taksim Square and Tünel Square-Karaköy, as well as Nostalji Tram services on İstiklal Street, have also been suspended. Additionally, İETT’s bus stops in the Taksim area have been closed on both sides, redirecting traffic to alternative routes.
Fire brigade and ambulance teams are on standby in Taksim Square, ensuring quick response to any emergencies. Similarly, the streets leading towards Taksim and surrounding areas in Mecidiyeköy have been closed off to further enhance security measures.
In Saraçhane, intense security measures have been implemented with road closures and police conducting body searches at entry points. Riot police and TOMAs have been stationed under the Bozdoğan Arch, monitoring Unkapanı direction.
In Beşiktaş, barriers have been placed at strategic points, allowing controlled passage for residents, employees, and tourists. Dolmabahçe Street, typically bustling, remains empty due to the security measures. Ferry and motorboat services have been cancelled, prompting citizens to leave upon officials’ warning.
