Ministry of Health Conducts Oral and Dental Health Screenings in Primary Schools

The Ministry of Health recently conducted oral and dental health screenings in primary schools as part of their campaign promoting a healthy body starting with a healthy mouth. This initiative aims to raise awareness about oral and dental health among students and assess the current situation in primary schools.

According to the Ministry’s statement, the results of the study conducted by the Department of Basic Health Services will be published on the ministry’s website, providing valuable insights into the oral and dental health of students in primary schools.

Between March 17 and May 5, 2023, the Department of Basic Health Services conducted screenings in 24 primary schools across four districts. The examinations focused on 2nd and 3rd grade students. In addition to the screenings, the children also received brushing and nutrition training to promote dental health.

A total of 1,434 students underwent oral and dental health checks during the screenings. The schools included seven in İskele and Güzelyurt districts, six in Lefkoşa district, and four in Lefke district. Of the students screened, 739 (52 percent) were girls, and 695 (48 percent) were boys. The distribution of students by districts revealed that 545 students were examined in Nicosia, 421 in Güzelyurt, 299 in İskele, and 169 in Lefke.

The findings of the screenings showed that 430 (57 percent) of 2nd-year students and 351 (52 percent) of 3rd-year students had dental caries. Overall, dental caries were detected in 781 (54 percent) of the students in 2nd and 3rd grade.

The screenings also revealed the range and median values of dental caries. The maximum number of dental caries observed was 17 in 2nd grade students, while the maximum for 3rd grade students was 14. The median values were 6 caries for 2nd-grade students and 5 caries for 3rd-grade students.

These findings highlight the importance of oral and dental health awareness among primary school students. By promoting proper oral hygiene and providing necessary training, the Ministry of Health aims to improve the overall dental health of the younger generation. The publication of the study’s report will further contribute to the efforts in this field and provide valuable information for future initiatives.
