New Security Measures Implemented in New York Subways to Combat Rising Crime Rates
Governor Hochul has announced a new plan to address the increasing crime rates in New York subways. As part of this plan, 750 National Guard members and 250 police officers will be stationed at the entrances of subway stations to enhance security measures.
“No one going about their daily routines should have to fear for their safety due to the presence of deadly weapons,” Governor Hochul emphasized during a press conference. In addition to beefing up security personnel, additional teams will be deployed to address cases involving individuals exhibiting signs of mental illness.
Governor Hochul is also pushing for legislation that would grant judges the authority to prohibit repeat offenders from riding the subways in New York. This move seeks to keep criminals away from public transportation and ensure the safety of passengers.
The implementation of these measures follows a concerning 45 percent increase in crime rates in New York subways in January. According to New York Police Department Chief Michael Kemper, detentions in the subway system have risen by 45 percent this year, with 3,000 arrests made in the first two months alone. Many of those detained had committed multiple offenses.
The governor’s office is working closely with law enforcement agencies and regional prosecutors to ensure that the subway system remains a safe and secure mode of transportation for all commuters. With these new security measures in place, Governor Hochul is committed to creating a safer environment for those using the subway system in New York.
