Netanyahu Escalates Violence in Gaza Through Security Concessions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly conducting security consultations regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the negotiations for the release of prisoners, according to a report on Israeli State Television Kan.
The consultations are said to be focused on the future of the attacks in Gaza, with plans for more aggressive operations, including a large-scale extension of the land operation. The Israeli government has called for a meeting of the Council of Ministers to make decisions about the steps to be taken in Gaza.
Negotiations for a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange are said to be “still suspended,” with efforts to secure a two-month ceasefire in exchange for the release of 5 Israeli prisoners remaining fruitless so far.
Security consultations involving top officials, including Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir, have been held to decide on the next steps in Gaza. Despite numerous attempts by Egypt to advance the negotiations, progress has been slow.
The report also highlights that the Israeli army resumed violent attacks on Gaza on March 18, targeting senior Hamas leaders and leading to increased pressure on the negotiations. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 830 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and injuries to more than 1663 people.
Since October 7, 2023, the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza has reached 50,183, with 113,828 wounded.
