North Korean hackers make off with over $100M in digital currency theft

Hackers belonging to the North Korea-based cybercrime group “Lazarus” have reportedly hijacked over 5,500 digital wallets on Atomic Wallet, according to cryptocurrency analytics firm Elliptic. Atomic Wallet, an Estonia-based company, has not yet commented on the incident, but previously admitted to being hacked and hired analytics firm Chainalysis to investigate. The United Nations announced at the beginning of this year that North Korea committed more digital currency thefts in 2022 than the previous year, with experts suggesting the stolen money could be funding the country’s nuclear and missile programs, which are under sanctions. The incident highlights the need for increased cybersecurity measures to prevent cyberattacks and protect digital wallets from being compromised.
