Aurora, a stunning natural event, predominantly occurs at the Earth’s poles. However, on rare occasions, it can also be witnessed in temperate latitudes when a powerful magnetic storm temporarily expands the auroral oval. These magnetic storms tend to take place approximately every 11 years, coinciding with the sunspot cycle, with the most intense storm occurring within the three-year period following a solar eruption. Nonetheless, the likelihood of aurora formation within the auroral region is generally influenced by the slope of the IMF lines, known as Bz in the scientific literature, particularly when they point southward.
Interestingly, the geomagnetic storms responsible for triggering the awe-inspiring aurora displays tend to be more pronounced during the equinox months.
