Novruz Festivities Coming to Kazan Orient
Novruz Celebration to Take Place in Kazan on March 22, 2025
Kazan will be hosting the Novruz celebration on March 22, 2025, a festival observed in countries with Turkic-speaking populations, including Turkmenistan.
The festival signifies the arrival of spring, the awakening of nature, and the beginning of a new year according to the natural calendar. It will be held at the House of Friendship of Peoples of Tatarstan and organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, the State Budgetary Institution “House of Friendship of Peoples of Tatarstan,” and the Regional Public Organization “Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan.”
Various events are scheduled to take place during the celebration, including concerts, an exhibition and fair of folk arts and crafts, master classes focusing on the traditions and culture of these peoples, the “Nauruz Guzäle” and “Nauruz Batyr” contests, as well as traditional folk games and amusements of the Novruz festival.
A highlight of the celebration will be the showcasing of national dishes, with Sumalak being the main delicacy prepared on March 21. This nutritious dish, made from germinated wheat grains boiled in a cauldron with the addition of flour for 20-24 hours, is known to restore strength and invigorate those who consume it. The tradition of preparing Sumalak involves a large number of people participating in the stirring of the viscous mass, with the entire neighborhood taking turns at the cauldron, singing, dancing, and sharing cheerful refrains.
To prevent the Sumalak from burning, small stones are placed at the bottom of the cauldron. If a stone is found while eating the dish, it is believed that making a wish will bring good luck.
The Novruz celebration in Kazan promises to be a vibrant and festive event, bringing together people to celebrate the spirit of spring and new beginnings.
