Kyrgyzstan’s State Tax Service Officials Detained for Corruption
In a shocking turn of events, several officials from the State Tax Service in Kyrgyzstan have been detained on suspicions of corruption. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Adylbek Kasymaliev, recently relieved Nurlan Umtulov of his position as Deputy Chairman of the State Tax Service due to his involvement in the scandal.
The investigations began on December 3, 2024, when mass detentions of tax officials from the capital’s district departments took place in Bishkek. The State Committee for National Security, in collaboration with Alpha servicemen, conducted searches that led to the questioning of four department heads and around 30 employees. The reasons for the searches were related to a corruption scheme involving electronic consignment notes, resulting in a loss of 3.2 billion soms from the country’s budget.
Kamchybek Tashiev, the head of the State Committee for National Security, announced that further detentions might include senior managers from the Tax Service. Subsequently, on December 6, Chairman Altynbek Abduvapov and his deputy Islambek Kydyrgychev were detained after interrogation. Both officials are suspected of participating in corruption schemes and abusing their power.
