The Australian Newspaper Reports UN Special Rapporteur’s Statement on Israel’s Attacks on Gaza
The Australian newspaper recently reported on a statement made by United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, regarding Israel’s attacks on Gaza. According to Albanese, Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute war crimes under international law, and the country must be held accountable for its actions.
During a speech at the Australian National Press Club, Albanese emphasized that Palestinians are facing an “existential threat” and that Israel cannot claim a right to self-defense against a threat originating from a region it occupies. She also pointed out that Israel’s bombardment of Gaza lacked proportionality and criticized the international community for its paralysis in addressing the crisis.
Albanese went on to express concerns about the potential for genocide against the Palestinian people and stated that the UN had experienced its greatest political and humanitarian failure in light of the situation. She highlighted the long history of violence and displacement faced by the Palestinian people and stressed that the actions by Israel constituted not only war crimes but also crimes against humanity.
In addition, Albanese mentioned that since 1967, Israel has built 300 colonies in occupied Palestinian territory, which she deemed to be a war crime in itself. She also noted that war crimes were being committed before October 7 and that when such actions are widespread and systematic, they constitute a crime against humanity.
