Orbán claims war supporters attempted to assassinate Trump
The recent assassination attempt against former US President Donald Trump has sparked discussions about the dangerous political culture that sees political opponents as threats to democracy. Balázs Orbán, the political director of the prime minister’s office, expressed his concerns in a recent interview on public radio.
Orbán pointed out that liberal politicians in Brussels often paint right-wing leaders as harbingers of doom for democracy. This kind of rhetoric, he explained, can provide extremists with justification for using any means necessary to prevent perceived evils. He emphasized that while criticism is acceptable in political discourse, human dignity must always be upheld.
According to Orbán, the democratic will of the people in Hungary, Europe, and America has shown a rejection of certain liberal policies, particularly those related to war and migration. He revealed that during a dinner with Donald Trump in Florida, they both agreed that American politics has become permanently hardened.
Orbán also delved into the perception of a war between the West and Russia, noting that in times of war, all means are deemed acceptable. Those who oppose this war mentality are often labeled as internal enemies. He stressed the importance of maintaining peace and preventing extreme attitudes from infiltrating Hungary.
Furthermore, Orbán mentioned the need for potential mediators to navigate a path to peace, with both China and Turkiye showing commitment in this regard. However, he criticized the “stuck” war strategy of the liberal American leadership and their European allies. Trump, on the other hand, reportedly expressed a willingness to resolve the issue independently.
In light of America’s internal political challenges, Orbán suggested that Europe should take a more proactive role in mediating conflicts and advocating for peace. He revealed that the Hungarian prime minister has submitted a report to Brussels proposing a strategic change of direction.
