Traffic Rule Violations and Road Safety in Uzbekistan: A 2024 Overview
In 2024, Uzbekistan witnessed a significant enforcement response to traffic rule violations, as authorities prosecuted 3,321 drivers under Article 266 of the Criminal Code, which addresses violations of traffic safety rules. This comprehensive crackdown resulted in 917 drivers receiving prison sentences, while 2,404 others faced non-custodial punishments.
Aziz Obidov, spokesperson for the Supreme Court, highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting the ongoing issues impacting road safety. The statistics reveal a troubling trend, with 9,364 road accidents reported throughout the year. Tragically, these incidents resulted in 2,203 fatalities and injuries to 8,901 individuals, underscoring the urgent need for increased enforcement and adherence to traffic regulations.
As the new year began, the first quarter of 2025 echoed the challenges of the previous year, with 891 drivers already prosecuted for similar offenses by March. Among these, 173 received prison sentences, while the majority, 718 individuals, were given non-custodial penalties, indicating a continuing emphasis on rehabilitative measures.
The ongoing efforts to improve road safety in Uzbekistan highlight the government’s commitment to addressing the rising number of traffic-related incidents.
