Publication Date: 08.07.2023
Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan has embarked on his ‘Justice and Change’ march to the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Headquarters, which is now on its sixth day. During a press conference held in Kızılcahamam, Özcan expressed his growing faith in the cause and voiced his concerns about the panic within the headquarters.
Özcan urged the CHP leadership not to close the doors of the headquarters. He acknowledged their panicked state but emphasized that it was no longer feasible for them to remain in office. The mayor directly addressed the president, urging him to reflect on his recent tweets, which have received overwhelming calls for resignation. Özcan highlighted that the wishes of the CHP base should be respected, emphasizing that it was time for the president to step down.
The mayor warned that if the headquarters did not take the necessary action, large masses would gather in front of the building after four days to demand the president’s resignation. He appealed to the CHP leadership, urging them not to force such a situation.
The tension within the CHP further escalated when CHP Deputy Chairman and Party Spokesperson Faik Öztrak made statements suggesting that the palace supported Mayor Özcan. In response, Özcan condemned Öztrak’s remarks, labeling them as nonsensical. He denied having any meetings or support from President Erdogan or his team. Özcan challenged Öztrak to provide evidence within 24 hours or face accusations of dishonesty.
Mayor Özcan emphasized that he has faced numerous inspections during his tenure and is currently the mayor subjected to the most scrutiny in Turkey. He acknowledged his intent to bring change, not only within the CHP but also in relation to President Erdogan’s leadership. Özcan criticized the CHP leadership for desperately seeking support and accused them of inadvertently empowering President Erdogan by reelecting him.
As the ‘Justice and Change’ march continues, tensions rise within the CHP and the spotlight remains on the demands for resignation and the potential reshaping of the party’s leadership.
