Palestinian Flags Barred from Eurovision Entry
The Eurovision Song Contest, set to take place in the Malmö Arena, has stirred up controversy with the announcement by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) that individuals attempting to enter the arena with Palestinian flags or political banners will be stopped and have their items confiscated.
This decision has sparked a response from the Swedish Palestine Group, who have declared their intention to protest Israel’s participation in the contest on May 11 in Malmö. The group plans to hold a demonstration under the name “Genocide Free Song Contest”, which will also feature performances by local artists.
The Swedish state television SVT reported that the Malmö Police Department is preparing for an estimated 100 thousand demonstrators to gather in the city for the protest. In order to maintain security and prevent any incidents during the demonstrations, the police will be implementing extensive measures and will be receiving support from police teams from Norway and Denmark.
As tensions rise ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest, all eyes will be on Malmö to see how the protests unfold and how security forces handle the situation.
