Parents in Uzbekistan face consequences for students’ absence
The National Guard of Uzbekistan has recently reported on its efforts to monitor school attendance and take action against parents of students who have been absent without excuse. A collaborative investigation conducted on February 6-8 in conjunction with the Ministry of Pre-School and School Education revealed that 188,000 students were absent from classes without valid reasons.
According to Davron Jumanazarov, head of the National Guard’s information service, a new system involving inspector-psychologists and neighborhood councils has been implemented in schools and has proven to be effective. Out of the 146,277 students who were absent from school, 96,708 were excused due to illness or other reasons, while 49,569 were absent without valid excuses.
Cases of students feigning illness to skip classes are also under investigation. In the Kashkadarya region, it was discovered that 50 students reported as ill were actually not sick but had skipped classes without valid reasons. These students were returned to school, and their parents faced administrative consequences.
Warning notices were issued to 124,000 parents who neglected their educational responsibilities, with nearly four thousand facing administrative measures. Local meetings were held with over 104,000 parents of students who were skipping classes without cause to encourage their return to school.
Thanks to the implementation of the new system, 1.769 million students have been successfully returned to schools from February 6 to March 7 of this year. The nationwide school attendance rate now stands at 97.7 percent, with six attempts by unauthorized individuals to enter schools prevented in the past week.
Legal actions, including criminal and administrative measures, have been taken against those found responsible for any infractions. The National Guard’s ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to improving school attendance and ensuring the educational well-being of students in Uzbekistan.
