Parliamentary Commission Meets with Netflix Representatives
The commission meeting chaired by AK Party Hatay Deputy Hüseyin Yayman had a presentation from Netflix Turkey officials, Pelin Mavili and Özgür Artanç Savaş. During the meeting, Yayman emphasized the impact of digitalization on society and the issues surrounding virtual betting and gambling sites.
Yayman highlighted the increasing complaints received about virtual betting and gambling sites, stating that it has become a national security problem affecting families and public order. He urged for measures to be taken to address these issues and prevent negative outcomes such as suicides.
The commission also discussed the need for updated legislation to combat the growth of betting and games of chance, especially in the digital space. Yayman emphasized the importance of protecting children and families from the harmful effects of online gambling and called for collaboration between relevant institutions.
Pelin Mavili from Netflix Turkey presented on the company’s role in the creative industry, highlighting their contribution to the Turkish content market and global streaming audience. Mavili shared insights on the employment potential and export opportunities of the creative ecosystem.
During the meeting, MPs questioned the Netflix officials on various topics, including the portrayal of LGBT content on the platform and the removal of certain collections. Mavili clarified Netflix’s approach to content selection and labeling, emphasizing their commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
The commission meeting continued with a closed session to further discuss the issues raised during the presentations and Q&A session.
