As the conflict between Israel and Gaza continues to escalate into its 27th day, Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Catholic community, has made a statement regarding the resolution of this long-standing issue in the region.
During an interview with Italian state television, Pope Francis emphasized that every war is a defeat and called for the establishment of “two societies and two states” as the solution. He firmly underlined that wars cannot lead to a resolution, and only peace and dialogue can bring about a lasting solution. The Pope stressed the importance of both peoples coexisting and stated that a solution encompassing two societies and two states is a wise approach.
Furthermore, Pope Francis highlighted the significance of Jerusalem, recalling the Oslo agreement. He proposed that Jerusalem be bestowed with special status together with the two states, recognizing its importance to both parties involved.
When questioned about the potential danger of the conflict escalating further, the Pope expressed hope in human wisdom, believing that the spread of war can be halted. He stated, “Many things and many lives will end, but I think human wisdom will stop this.”
It is worth noting that this is not the first instance in which Pope Francis has called for a two-state solution. Six years ago, during his address after the 2017 Christian Christmas mass, he had already emphasized the importance of the international community’s continued efforts in resolving the Palestinian issue. He called upon the parties involved to engage in dialogue and urged for prayers for a two-state solution.
With the Pope’s renewed appeal for peace and his emphasis on a two-state solution, it is hoped that his words will resonate internationally and contribute to finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.
