Pope Francis Successfully Recovers from Surgery and Leaves Hospital
Pope Francis has completed his recovery process after undergoing a laparotomy and abdominal wall prosthesis placement operation on 7 June at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. The surgery was needed to address a hernia that developed as a result of an incision in his abdomen from a previous large intestine surgery two years ago.
Expressing his gratitude towards the medical team, Pope Francis left the hospital this morning. Greeting the journalists, patients, and their relatives who were eagerly waiting for him at the hospital exit, the spiritual leader of the Catholics humorously remarked, “I am still alive.”
During his encounter with the media, Pope Francis also expressed deep sorrow over the migrant tragedy that occurred on 14 June near the Peloponnese Peninsula of Greece. He shared his sentiments and concerns for the victims and their families affected by this tragic event.
After leaving the hospital, Pope Francis proceeded to the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore where he offered a prayer of thanks for his successful recovery.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time the 86-year-old Pope has been admitted to Gemelli Hospital. He was previously hospitalized on 29 March due to shortness of breath, which was later diagnosed as a respiratory tract infection. After receiving treatment, he was discharged on 1 April.
Furthermore, Pope Francis has been using a wheelchair recently due to discomfort in his knees. Despite these physical challenges, he has continued to fulfill his spiritual duties and responsibilities as the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church since his election in 2013.
